Best Locations for an Australian Winter Elopement

Location Guides

You might have seen our recent blog with our top tips for a winter elopement in Australia (if you haven’t – give it a look!). This time, we’ve decided to go one step further and give you our top 5 locations for your winter elopement.

And do you know what’s best?  They’re scattered across Australia – all right here in our backyard! There are so many places across this epic country to visit during winter, so we don’t want to keep you all day. We figured 5 was the perfect number – keep on reading to check them out!

One. Mount Hotham, VIC

Mount Hotham is an alpine wonderland and the highest of Victoria’s ski resorts – about 5 hours north-east of Melbourne.

If you’re a keen skier or boarder, then you’ve probably heard of it, as it has some of the best runs in the country. But what we love about Hotham is the vibe, and the plethora of other activities to do on the mountain!

Hotham has some of the most incredible mountain views, the sunsets over the snowy, forest backdrop are EPIC. There are an abundance of great activities to take in this picturesque setting, including dog sledding, scenic flights or helicopter rides, sled tours, snowshoeing and spa experiences. Not to mention the go-to skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing!

With plenty of accommodation, ranging from quaint little lodges, to contemporary resorts, there are lots of options to suit your budget and style!

Two. Cradle Mountain, TAS

Cradle Mountain is on the bucket list of hikers and nature enthusiasts around the world – and for good reason. The most famous National Park in Tasmania is just over three hours from Launceston and Devonport and has some of the most incredible views and scenery you will ever see.

In winter, this becomes the most incredible moody wonderland – the low fog and unpredictable conditions can make for some stunning photos and amazing backdrops. Plan a hike as part of your elopement, it might be for the ceremony, a few portraits, or even just a fun activity as part of the day.

The Cradle Mountain Lodge is another major drawcard to the region, as you can combine the adventure and wilderness of the park with a luxurious accommodation experience. The spa and fine dining experiences are SO amazing!

Three. Snowy Mountains, NSW

The Snowy Mountain region of NSW is home to the tallest mountain in Australia – Mount Kosciuszko. The broad expanses of the region and the incredible altitude and views make for the most incredible winter escape.

In winter, the region becomes a true alpine must-see and is only accessible through ski resorts Perisher and Thredbo. Being an amazing tourist hotspot, there are so many amazing adventures and activities to enjoy – with the incredible accommodation to match. We love suggesting lodges as well as Airbnb listings in the area, as there are some unique places to stay, including the most romantic, cosy tiny homes!

Much like Hotham, skiing, snowboarding and sledding are amazing options. But we’d also definitely recommend some snowshoeing! This is one of our fave things to do in the snow, as it’s so peaceful, really letting you absorb and enjoy the moment in some amazing country! Another great thing to check out is a site called riparound (LINK), an awesome booking platform for activities and escapes.

Around 2 and a half hours from Canberra, the Snowy Mountains are a perfect winter elopement location – particularly if you’re coming from further north.

Four. Blue Mountains, NSW

The Blue Mountains, within 2 hours of Sydney, are one of New South Wales’ most amazing sights (and sites!). Being a little further north, this region doesn’t have the alpine conditions of the Snowy Mountains or Victoria’s snowfields, which means it’s a little warmer and more predictable.

The best thing about this area in winter is the crisp, cold weather, paired with the most amazing blue skies. This really comes into its own when you see the INCREDIBLE scenery as you look over the contouring landscape that the Blue Mountains are so famous for.

The lookouts are amongst the most scenic we’ve seen, and the often-popular tourist destinations and busy tracks are SO much quieter in the winter months! This makes it all the better for a quiet, romantic and picturesque elopement!

The amazing waterfalls littered across the region will also be much quieter than normal, definitely flowing to their most glorious potential at this time of year!

Five. Mount Buller, VIC

Mount Buller is an amazing ski resort, known for its incredible snow and proximity to Melbourne. Within 4 hours from the city, Buller has plentiful options to celebrate and relax in its quaint village, with great restaurants and bars nestled amongst the ski runs.

It’s definitely the perfect place for ski and snowboard lovers, with options for snow novices, as well as the super-advanced – not to mention the other epic activities, such as cross country skiing, dog sledding and chairlift sightseeing! You can really make your elopement day the ultimate outdoor experience.

Within an hour from stunning country locations Mansfield and Merrijig, Buller can be a home base or a day trip as part of your elopement. You’re definitely not limited to the mountain and all it has to offer – there’s a whole region worth exploring!

Despite the stereotype that Australia is all desert and nothing else, we are incredibly lucky to have so many winter hotspots to experience and enjoy. What better way to take on one of these amazing locations than to have the most amazing elopement?!

Whether it’s relaxed and cozy, or full of high-octane activities, the options are aplenty – and the winter world is your oyster.
